Term Hashish
Field Plant - Narcotic
Pronunciation 'ha-‚shēsh, ha-'shēsh
Etymology Middle English, from Old English hænep; akin to Old High German hanaf hemp, Greek kannabis
Definition Hashish is an intoxicant, producing euphoria and exaggerations of sensations. It is a preparation composed of purified resin coming mostly from the resin gland from the Cannabis plant, which contain the same active ingredients but in higher concentrations than other parts of the plant such as the buds or the leaves. Resin glands can be found on the flowers of a mature female plant. Resin is sometimes cut with other substances, such as paraffin wax.
The plants may be sifted by hand or in motorized tumblers. When the resin glands are separated from the plant, the resulting powder is compressed into blocks of hashish aided by heat, which color can vary from green, black, reddish brown, or most commonly light to dark brown.
Hashish is sometimes chewed or used as an ingredient in food (cookies, cake...) , but is mostly smoked in smoking pipes or bongs, or mixed with tobacco and smoked in joints.
