Term Harl
Field Hemp compound
Etymology Cognate with Middle Low German herle, Low German harle, East Frisian harrel "hemp fibre".
Definition Harl is the bunch of filaments coming from hemp bast, which have not yet been spun.
It is used to make yarn which will then be weaved, to make ropes or clothes, depending on the quality.
  • The mattresses are in three parts, stuffed with hemp-harl.
  • As soon as the seed has been secured, the flax and hemp are steeped hi water, till the flax separate from the rind, and till the harl of the hemp spring from the stalk.
Phraseology "Harl" is often used with the term "Hemp" (Hemp harl or Harl of hemp).
